This is a late post, but like a dream I couldn't forget, I had to bookmark these guys. These prints feel nostalgic, childish and naive - completely loveable. Swash is a UK design label, that produces designs with strong use of their prints. Their Summer 2010 range, aptly titled Dream Machine summarises their mood precisely. They seem to have a timely appeal about them, co-inciding with the release of Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland.

After a pretty long hiatus, I am back. Lot of things happening, big and small things. Dramas, laughing, crying, everything...
Anyway, another gem to note - Slow and Steady Wins the Race. A New York based, slow clothing company with well designed, but affordable basics. Their range harks back to the fundamentals of clothing design. Quote from site; "The costs and quantity of production are purposefully kept low to help promote the idea of a democratic and grass-roots distribution."
Their range includes footwear, jewellery and terribly cool sunglasses. Lemming some canvas wedges and the pearl tee. Their sizing runs down to a 34 which is excellent!

At the risk of offending anybody, this place will remain nameless, but when asked to describe a particular suburb, I couldn't help but blurt out that it was a "scummy-scum-scum" kind of place. Initially I felt a bit like a suburb snob. I mean even scummy-scum-scum places have their charms. For instance, you can get a regular coffee for about $3.00 and lunch with a drink for under $10.00(not fast food). And if you feel really extravagant there is the local restaurant, where you can get a three course meal at city prices. There's also the local post office where it feels like a strange time warp. You're likely to spot mullets that make David Bowie blush, and hair extensions that are long and golden but with a serious perm. The suburb is the home of a Hummer-limo rental company, major industrial textiles supplier and a stamp making company.

I saw these and had to post them. Another collaboration. This one is designers x Delonghi for Oxfam(US). These, among others, will be auctioned in October this year on Ebay.
They've selected artists, designers from different disciplines and their designs have been etched onto the machines. The results are stunning. I would be more than happy to have one of these machines to grace the kitchen of my house.

One of my favourite things about where I live is how the trees look in Winter. I took this one just a few blocks from my house. The sun came out for a few moments just as I was preparing to take the shot. It was really quiet and my camera made this evil laughing noise just before it took the photo. I forgot it was even on. It's this kitchy function that's supposed to encourage the subject to smile, although it's more likely to scare the bejesus out of you. I think the guy walking down the opposite side of the street was a bit confused.

Very rarely do you come across a publication that can hold you attention with every article. VERY magazine(UK) does exactly this. It's humble pages contain candid and intimate interviews with individuals who work in various roles in Art, Fashion and Design. Some established, other up and coming. The current issue 14 of VERY, was themed around the concept of 'vintage' in fashion. While this topic has probably been done to death, the articles give various points of view including from the historian, stylist and collector and discusses the origins and implications of the label 'vintage'.

Also printed on eco-friendly stock! It's a refreshing read and quite accessible.

Formulaic Street Fashion

While my daily existence has for the past year been devoid spending as much time in the city as i had previously, I think i am able to see things a bit more subjectively...

i.e. street fashion.
It has so ever more clearly come to my attention that the debate of 'cool' street fashion seems to be constantly portrayed by many online fashion bloggers and street photography websites, as something of a formula akin to a combination of...

a) messed up hair like i combed it with my cat this morning
b) i shaved my face while on something... 'man it was so creative' moment
c) bowler hat
d) brogues
e) tights
d) black

Now, while I don't deny partaking in any specific one of those (except for the face shaving), what is the point of photography and 'exposing' the same formulaic fashion ideas over and over again? But then, maybe that's the only thing people in Melbourne are wearing now... are we really all just sheep? My optimistic opinion, and hope is that it is that it's just the photographer being subjective, rather than our lack of individuality or creativity in dress.

Impulse buy of the week - tickets interstate for long weekend. While I do not necessarily agree with these handouts going out this week, I have to admit it will be handy. A bird told me that we'd be likely to go somewhere that was something of a 'laundromat' - place for picking up skirts and suits. And if you're not catching my drift, I mean people in such attire. Apparently this is a 'must go' place. We'll see... but it's looking likely to be an $$ weekend!

In the spirit of my scrapbooking, I am loving more and more the work of Acne. They operate as a collective of designers, making film/digital works, publication and their clothing line. Their film site is under construction but I'll be interested to see their work.

I missed this when it screened at Acmi a while ago so I tracked it down and finally got around to watching it other night. Yves Saint Laurent designed the costumes for Miriam.

The Hunger 1983 (Belle De Jour, France)
Director: Tony Scott
Starring: Susan Sarrandon, David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve, and Dan Hedeya, that guy that always plays a scmuck, cop or bad guy in Hollywood films. (I think he was in The Usual Suspects, and some mafia movie).

Miriam (Deneuve) is a vampiress with partner John (Bowie) who is aging. Sarah (Sarrandon) is a medical researcher who is investigating the aging process, and may have the answer.
It's visually stunning and really well made. Great soundtrack too. The actual story was a bit flakey, but the acting was really good and made it less noticeable.

Minimarket. Designer trio from Sweden, showed their SS09 range at Berns Fashion Week @ Stockholm. I've heard of their name before but was blown away by their show. Although it was their SS09 range it did feature quite heavily leggings and lots of coats.

After a resounding yes to my berries and champagne over the festive season I've decided the quickest and easiest way to share the love was none other than adding it to my s-crap collections online. Don't forget you can click to enlarge to print off.

You can use any champagne although it is recommended you use one that you would normally drink to make sure it tastes good. I used Brown Brothers Zibibbo, which is quite sweet, but went well with the berries. Enjoy!

After steadily becoming a big fan of Hercules and Love Affair, I thought i'd check out who they actually were and found that the vocalist for many of their tracks, whom, i thought was a man with a deep husky Nina Simone-like sound was actually very hot tranny, Nomi Ruiz (with a thing for fringed outfits). Anyway, that aside from that I am very impressed by the group. I love the trumpets and how they're fused into the disco sound. Nice video clips too. Fingers are still crossed for a sideshow...

Rediscovered an old track hiding in my iTunes, "Perfedia" instrumental from film 2046 soundtrack. Has been covered by many including Glen Miller and Nat King Cole.

"Perfidia" (Spanish for "perfidy", as in faithless, treacherous or false) is a popular Mexican song about love and betrayal written by Alberto Domínguez (1913--1975).

It's something I can imagine old folks dancing to at an RSL. But really it's a beautiful song.

Calvin Klein's latest ad for their Secret Obsession featuring Eva Mendes has been banned on many US networks and tagged controversial even though it has not been released yet (something to do with a visible nipple...). Known for their strong adverts, I found some old ads. Brooke Shields as a teen model (15/16) also did a whole series for CK jeans, with cheesy suggestive lines. They were actually quite good!

David Lynch (arty-fartsy film director; Mullholland Drive, Twin Peaks, Eraserhead) also did a whole series for CK. Other clients include luxury brand Gucci, PS2, and even a pregnancy test ad (Slow work patch...?)

Ross Kemp, ex British actor on Eastenders and journalist did a documentary series on gangs. He reminds me of that guy from that cop show POLICE. The series won the BAFTA (British Association of Film and Television Awards) for Ross Kemp On Gangs in 2007. I found this while looking up some dancehall music. The background/mood setting music is a bit cheesy at times. Ross Kemp goes to Kingston (capital of Jamaica) and interviews gang members and eventually gets to speak to a Don. He' is 24. One of his henchman standing nearby with a gun is wearing a Burberry scarf around his forehead. (Agyness Deyn, Kate Moss... gangster kid for Burberry?)

It's 45mins, so you'll need a bit of time to watch it.
The series also includes gangs from Russia, Poland, El Salvador and New Zealand (yes, that's right).

Christian Louboutin and David Lynch have locked heads to create the photographic exhibition, Fetish. The show features five limited edition pairs of shoes by Louboutin alongside five signed photographs of the shoes by Lynch.

As with so many collaborations, things moved very quickly. The process began when Lynch commissioned Louboutin to make shoes for an exhibition he was hosting at the Cartier Foundation back in March this year. The pair quickly became friends and when Louboutin wanted to push the notion of extreme fetish in his work, by creating shoes and then playing with their creative representation in two-dimensional images, it was clear Lynch would be the man to translate his vision.

"I tried to keep an element of my drawings, to be faithful to the drawings, with no practicality, just pleasure, thinking of extreme fetish shoes. Usually when you go to the third dimension you lose something," explains Louboutin of his initial concept, "then I wanted to photograph them - I find there's more emotion with cinematic images. I wanted Lynch's style and since we'd recently become friends it was natural for me to ask him."

The designer has an atelier where the one-of-a-kind shoes are created. Throwing practicality and comfort out the window, Louboutin has pushed shoe design to its limits with 26cms heels, spikes on the inside and sole of the shoe, and Siamese heels (two shoes fused at the heel).

The idea is that the shoe becomes a cult object, transcending the most beautiful part of the shoe and/or foot. Louboutin pinpoints "The Siamese shoe" as his favourite, "For me the shoe and the picture together become very close to Twin Peaks."

Swear London have nicely bridged that gray area of casual-dress footwear for men. I'm more impressed with their homme range than their femme. Great use of brogue styling for casual shoes with patent, patent/kid, kid/suede uppers, perforated leathers, and coloured soles. Finishes and detailing are key.

A year ago, I was fighting for a spot ushering for the Tina Kalivas show up in Sydney for fashion week, and hearing about how girls were being abused by fashion queens for not knowing how to steam garments. I'm glad this year that I can have a nice untainted viewing of the shows from the comfort of my home thanks to the interwebs. Nicola Finetti's collection featured his signature use of tucks/folds/draping. Lots of mini dresses, noteables; the gradated blue pleated off-should mini, gold balloon sleeve dress reminiscent of the 80s, and resort style oversize stripe dress.

Jayson Brunsdon dresses Hitchcock/sci-fi princesses of the noughties in hot white with gold trimmings, in Grecian influenced outfits.

The collection that excites me the most is Mad Cortes. In an almost perfect show, her combinations of floral prints, and colours = flirty and exciting, with wares for day into evening. Pick of the show; the opening floral dress.

I love zips. Call it a thing for kinky 80s fashion, and my love of Madonna's 'Human Nature' video, but I think zips are the next big thing. That in combination with bright juicy acidic colours or charcoal and steely gray. It's 80's/90s uber-club-trash but slick and modern with clean lines. First spotted zips in pics from a collection by Christopher Kane Spring 07. I knew it'd be hot. Heads up for Red and Pink TOGETHER.

Bathing Ape opened a store in West Hollywood with an A-list of celebrity guests... Pharrel, Kanye West, Mike Tyson, Nicole Ritchie.

I couldn't find a picture. If I had a watch like that I'd so be the coolest kid on the block. Whenever I'd go to check the time I'd be reminded of just how filthy rich I was... or poor from buying a watch and getting a million diamonds put in it. I'd like to think it'd be the first one that would be applicable to me.

I remember one day I was in a little shop and found a really really gorgeous tunic dress top by Fleur Wood. Wanted it badly but knew buying a dress one size too big wasn't the best idea. It was a light cream tunic, with a boat neck, no sleeves, and the waist that between and chest and the stomach, with the skirt dropping to mid-thigh. It was made out of a light crepe-cotton, and had a light blue lace band at the waist. I'd always thought of her pieces as being for a more mature customer. An Armadale/Camberwell mother maybe, but i just fell in love with its simplicity. Later I visited her website and found out more about her and her work.

Kind of reminds me of Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde, with an air of French chic. The knickers and camis, teamed with the open blouses add a bit of cuteness and cheek.

Went and saw Roisin Murphy on Friday night. She was incredible. I was mashed in between feisty queens and trashy weirdos at Billboards. Was fun!
I think she's really chanelling the late Isabella Blow. Took some bad pics with my new phone. Costume highlights - hot pink leather gloves and white disc hat.

I really want to see this film in its entirety. It's super lo-tech quality from being made in the 1970s makes it kind of funny. The style has this Hitchcock touch. The director, Dario Argento always uses his hands as the killer in his horror movies.
